Burglary at work
Although I dread the thought of being burgled at home, I have never thought about what it would be like to be burgled at work.
We recently had our practice refurbished and extended with a new alarm system and double glazed, lockable windows. We took the opportunity to improve our security by introducing a policy of locked windows (which is a condition of the insurance policy) and had new security lighting installed all round the premises. Smug – me, well a bit!
4am one August morning and one of the principals was called into the practice when the alarm went off. Not unduly worried because we quite often get called out by unknown phantoms setting of the alarm, he was actually faced with the real thing this time.
Two blokes had smashed the double glazed window – what a mess it makes - and made off with the contents of the till (the £50 float).
Next morning there was much to do – especially once the Crime Scene Investigators had covered the surfaces throughout with their dusty fingerprint powder.
It didn’t take long to get back to normal and the two men were, apprehended so we now await Crime Prevention to tell us what else we could have done to deter further burglaries. Not so smug now!
Lessons Learned…
Examine the insurance policy carefully. As you probably all know, the jemmied open cash register and contents were not insured as we are required, via the insurance policy, to keep the register empty at night.
