Q Amalgam Carriers: What to do?
Following a recent infection-control training session we were left with a question concerning the best practice for sterilization of amalgam carriers. What do you do? Do you take completely apart and autoclave in a sealed bag or open bag or.....
We have both vacuum and non vacuum autoclaves here and I understand depending on what type you use, it affects the procedure of bagging etc
A Best practice is to not use amalgam. How many times have we heard that lately? However we suggest the following:
1 - Completely take apart each time
2 - Ultrasonic
3- Autoclave un bagged
4 - Ideally autoclave in a vacuum sterilizer, as it forces the air into the hollow parts.
Dispose of the ultrasonic liquid in the separator system. (Legal requirement)
