Maggie Williams - Regional Co-ordinator for West Country (England)
Although Maggie’s career in dentistry began as a dental nurse, she is now employed as the manager of an orthodontic practice in Exeter. It is all a long way from her previous employ in a school whilst running her own fashion business!

Maggie enjoys walking with her Springer and has recently taken up running with two colleagues; her aim is to complete the Exeter half marathon in May 2007! She loves shopping, shoes, ER and her family but not necessarily in that order!

Since joining the BDPMA, Maggie says she has made many new friends and had opportunities that would not otherwise have been open to her and she is keen to afford those same opportunities to members and practice managers in her region.

Val Marriott  - Assistant Regional Co-ordinator for West Country (England)
Val has been a practice manager since July 2002 and comes from a PCT background.  Her current, mainly private practice (apart from children who are still seen on the NHS) consists of four surgeries and is planning to expand into cosmetic dentistry.

Val loves her job and enjoys the challenge of the wide variety of things that demand her attention on a day to day basis.  Keeping all the balls in the air is a challenge at times – but the team she is part of is extremely supportive and great to work with.

Val’s role in the BDPMA is not as scary as it sounds – having developed over time, she sort of fell into it.  She says, “We have a great time at our seminars – the view from our venue looks over Plymouth Sound – and the BDPMA has played a large part in my settling into the post as a non-clinician.”

Wendy Bull - Regional Co-ordinator for the West Country (England)
Wendy lives in Bristol with her partner and two grown up sons and has worked as a dental practice manager here for 12 years.

Prior to her career in dentistry, Wendy qualified as a psychiatric nurse and owned her own retail business.

Her dental career began as a receptionist, but drawing on her previous business background, her role naturally evolved to managing the practice.

Since joining the BDPMA 10 years ago, and with their encouragement and support, she has gained the Certificate in Dental Practice Management and the Diploma in Practice Management.

Through her participation in the Association, Wendy has made some great friends from all over the country and would like to encourage the members in her area to benefit just as she has.

Donna Cobb - Regional Co-ordinator for Central Southern (England)
Donna is practice manager for Teeth on the Heath dental practice based in Poole, Dorset. She has been in dentistry for 18 years starting out as a dental nurse but eventually deciding to move into a new and more challenging role of practice manager.

Donna is a qualified practice manager and is currently undertaking a diploma in strategic management. She is married with two very young children which is hard work when holding down a full time position, but her husband is incredibly supportive.

Donna enjoys the variety and daily challenges of her role and looks forward to her latest test; that of regional co-ordinator for the Central Southern region where she hopes to welcome and meet many more local colleagues.

Tarnia Murphy

Tarnia Murphy – Assistant Regional Co-ordinator for Central Southern (England)
Tarnia started her career in dentistry 5 years ago as a Dental Receptionist and became a Practice Manager 3 years later. She joined the BDPMA 2 years ago and became a member of the regional team in spring 2007.

Tarnia spends her time juggling the BDPMA, managing 2 practices, (one private and one specialist) and being a mum to her two children.

Tarnia is a qualified PA and is currently studying for her BTEC National Diploma Level 5 in Professional Dental Practice Management.

Tarnia supports the BDPMA wholeheartedly because of all the benefits the association has to offer. She has found this has helped her with her continuing professional development to enable her to set high standards of excellence within her job role. Tania’s aim is to help other practice managers excel in their roles too.

Tarnia has made some great friends through the BDPMA and thoroughly enjoys the seminars and annual BDPMA conference.

Regional Co-ordinators for the South East (England)
Hannah Hume, Regional Co-ordinator for South East (England)
Hannah started working in dentistry 16 years ago and qualified as a dental nurse. She worked as both receptionist and treatment plan co-ordinator before moving into management 9 years ago.

She completed a year-long course with Chris Barrow and also worked with business consultant, Bobbi Anthony in practice in addition to undertaking many other courses to improve her management knowledge.

Joining the BDPMA has not only giving her the chance to work with the Association but to receive valuable information from seminars and the Networking magazine that she can use within her own practice. Hannah's philosophy is very much one of continuous learning. Membership gives Hannah a great chance to meet other practice managers through networking at seminars. Hannah acknowledged that working in practice can be lonely at times so she values the support she receives from the BDPMA.

Kerry Zoina, Regional Co-ordinator for South East (England)
Kerry started her dental career 14 years ago as a dental nurse and moved into dental management three years ago for Confident Dental Practice. During her time at Confident Dental she has gained her BTEC Diploma in Dental Practice Management and completed the Chris Barrow course along with many other development opportunities.

In June 2007 Kerry was overjoyed to become a finalist for the BDPMA and 3M ESPE Practice Manager of the Year Award and on the same evening was delighted to win the BDPMA & Henry Schein Career Development Grant. Both accolades have been a career high and she is looking forward to starting the UMD level 5 Diploma in Dental Practice Management in October 2007.

Kerry feels that joining the BDPMA has helped her to grow in knowledge and ability in so many ways. The BDPMA is such an important part of her working life that she wants to share this amazing Association with all practice managers in the south east so they can benefit just as much as she has.

Crystal Dennis, Regional Co-ordinator for South East (England)
Crystal joined the dental industry almost 11 years ago and became practice manager after four years. She joined the BDPMA two years ago and became a member of the regional team the beginning of 2007.

Crystal manages two practices and is an enthusiastic advocate of NHS dentistry. She is always looking for ways to support other practice managers who work alongside the NHS and is currently studying a business course in administration and management

Since joining the BDPMA Crystal feels that she has been able to set a standard for her role as a practice manager. The Association has helped and is continuing to help her achieve and develop to a set of standards that she derives from contact with other members both locally and nationally. Her participation in the carefully planned seminars results in more appreciation and recognition of her role.

Crystal is keen to provide the same support and motivation to members of her region.
Grazyna Dickerson - Regional Co-ordinator for the North West (England)
After graduating from Manchester University with a degree in Genetics & Biochemistry, Grazyna then embarked on postgraduate studies in the land of daffodils and leeks- Cardiff! She returned to Manchester and spent several years working as a Medical Geneticist in a large teaching hospital which although challenging (and often emotionally draining) left her needing to expand her horizons further. A career change into business and finance followed which unbeknown to her at the time, would prove invaluable in the future.

After a whirlwind romance, Grazyna married her dentist husband and although continuing to work in the business world, she gradually became more involved in developing and running their practices. In order to enhance her understanding of the dental arena, she gained a diploma in Dental Practice Management and hasn’t looked back since.

Grazyna believes there are many benefits of being a member of the BDPMA, but she benefits mostly from NETWORKING and looks forward to meeting new local practice managers at the various BDPMA events!

image   Elaine Simmons  - Assistant Regional Co-ordinator for the North West (England)
Elaine began her dental career 33 years ago when she trained as a dental nurse at Liverpool Dental Hospital qualifying in 1974. For the next 25 years she worked within the salaried service as a senior dental nurse and oral health educator before gaining a BTEC in Business Studies and moving into practice management.

Elaine combines a part time position in a local NHS practice with her work for the North Western Deanery as a Primary Dental Care Development Facilitator liaising with DCPs and practitioners promoting PDPs etc. She is also involved in dental nurse training as a tutor and assessor and has set up two practice management forums within her area for two PCTs

On a personal note, Elaine is married to Tom and lives in a beautiful small Welsh village where she enjoys taking her two dogs on long walks. She also enjoys spending time with her four grandchildren.

Elaine says that joining the BDPMA has helped her to network with other like-minded people who understand the trials and triumphs of practice management. She enjoys assisting Grazyna with the North West Group and considers meeting local practice managers and networking, the way forward.

Niki Stocken - Regional Co-ordinator for the North East (England)

Niki started in dentistry 25 years ago as a dental nurse and has worked in different practices as well as for the health authority for over 10 years.

Looking for a change in her career, Niki went into private industry to work for a display company in their marketing and telesales team. Her role focused on liaising with blue chip companies and required her to work abroad.

In 2000, Niki returned to dentistry as a practice manager in Nottingham and helped a predominantly private practice grow with BDA Good Practice and Investors in People accreditations.

Niki became a member of BDPMA and has enjoyed networking and helping other practice managers to realise their own potential while working on her own CPD.

Niki has now moved to Darlington where she manages two NHS practices. She is really looking forward to setting up a North East Network Group and developing the links between managers in the region.
